Takes Flight at Costa Rican Airplane Hotel-MTLGT

If you have fantasies Architecture Design of living like the Swiss Family Robinson or even the characters in Lost, this rainforest resort near Quepos, Costa Rica may be just the ticket. Hotel Costa Verde Resort, Costa Rica used to be just a lodge until they added a fully outfitted, two bedroom suite made from a refurbished 1965 Boeing 727 hotel airframe. Now you can make your next Costa Rican vacation even more creative and unique by staying in the Costa Verde 727 Fuselage Suite ($300-$350/day), a luxuriously appointed, fully refurbished fuselage of a retired Boeing 727.

Situated on the edge of the Manuel Antonio National Park, the Costa Verde Resort features an incredible hotel suite set inside a 1965 Boeing 727 airplane. In its former life the airplane transported globetrotters on South Africa Air and Avianca Airlines, and it now serves as a two bedroom suite perched on the edge of the rainforest overlooking the beach and ocean.

The airplane was transported piece by piece from the San Jose airport to its current resting place on a pedestal 50 feet above the beach. It looks a bit like a model airplane on a stand, and we can only imagine the spectacular views from the balcony and the airplane windows. Five big trucks were needed to get the plane out to the resort, and while the transportation certainly had a negative ecological impact, the finished project is a stunning example of adaptive reuse.

The two-bedroom, two-bathroom suite also includes a kitchenette, flat-screen tvs, a dining room, and a terrace with an ocean view. We can’t really agree with their choice of furnishings, which are made from teak and shipped across the Pacific from Indonesia, but at least they were hand carved. The tip-to-tail paneling on the inside is also teak, but it was harvested locally in Costa Rica.

Like the Jumbo Jet Hostel in Stockholm, this hotel suite is sure to offer jet-setting travelers a lovely location for an extended layover. Before becoming a two bedroom hotel room, the Boeing 727 flew for South African Air and Avianca Airlines. The airframe was salvaged piece by piece from the San Jose, Costa Rica airport. Each piece was individually transported through the jungle and reassembled on a 50-foot pedestal.

Featuring a terrace opening up to the edge of the Costa Verde National Park, the interior is furnished with handmade teak furniture from Java, and the walls are linked with teak panelling.

This is one plane that won’t cramp your style. While you’re there, don’t forget to have dinner at El Avion, a converted C-123 airplane like the ones used in the Iran Contra affair (really). Hotel Costa Verde is proud to present its newest lodgings: The fully outfitted, meticulously detailed, two bedroom, Boeing 727 fuselage suite.

We have refurbished a vintage 1965 Boeing 727 airframe, which in its prior life shuttled globetrotters on South Africa Air and Avianca Airlines (Colombia). Our phoenix is now ready for its future duty as the most exclusive hotel suite in Costa Rica.

Luxury touches include two air conditioned rooms with queen-sized beds, private baths, flat screen televisions, and even a secluded river-rock spiral staircase entrance. While it’s not thoroughly green, with teak furnishings shipped over from Costa Rica, it’d sure make for a memorable trip.
