Fire Island House: Summer House by Roger Hirsch

Fire Island House is the program for this summer house by Roger Hirsch called for a Architecture design that connected inside with out, Summer House in an open plan which naturally integrated the living and dining area with the exterior deck and pool. Fire Island House at Summer House is all construction materials, cabinetry and furnishings were shipped by ferry and transported on golf-cart sized vehicles via wooden boardwalks. Roger Hirsch this modestly sized two-story summer house at Roger Hirschof is approximately 1,600 square feet, sits on a 60′ by 160′ lot in Fire Island House Pines, New York, off the south shore of Long Island.

Many interior home design fixtures and furnishings—most of which were custom designed for the project—were designed to be shipped in a disassembled, compact form and then reassembled on site. The 100 foot long exterior orange wall marks the offset entry to the site and separates the narrow entry walk from the pool area. The living room is double-height, with exposed wood rafters. Within this space, the “cube,” supported simply by its open floor joists which extend to meet the front façade, appears to float over the more intimate dining area.

The “Juicy Fruit” image on the kitchen hallway wall is a vintage paper billboard advertisement from 1951 which is adhered directly to the wall.

The first floor also includes a guest room and a bathroom with an indoor/outdoor shower which is accessible from the exterior deck.

The two upstairs bathrooms share an oversized, skylit shower which is accessed from each bathroom by large doors of acid etched glass.

Enhanced by the luxury design of the large, light filled shower, the slate-covered bathrooms feel more substantial than their small footprint might suggest.

The dining table has a series of interchangeable, flush steel fittings to hold either candles or test tubes of water for flowers or grass.
